Tartu

This competition entry was for a multi-functional cultural centre containing an art gallery, library, community centre, and cinema. The building design is made up of two c-shaped courtyards. One courtyard face the city and the other towards the existing park.

Project

The vertical circulation spaces that intersect the layered functions of the building are interactive gathering places. Their form developed into spelling Tartu from an aerial perspective and further developed into the branding for the building. They protrude up through the building and conceptually reference the 5th season in Estonia where the water table rises so far that the wells over flow. The curved roofs flow outwards like water from these metaphorical wells.
